About the project
Indo-German Cooperation on Agrivoltaics (IGCA) aims to support the upscaling of agrivoltaics through the development and field testing of viable business models, financing mechanisms, capacity development and policy alignment.
The Indo-German Cooperation on Agrivoltaics Project (IGCA) is a consortium comprised of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für International Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH as a lead agency, the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) India and Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) as implementing partners. The project is implemented on behalf of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Government of Germany. Within the Federal Government, the IKI is anchored in the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN).
The project aims to accelerate the adoption and scaling of agriphotovoltaics across India, creating sustainable benefits for rural communities while ensuring food security is maintained. The project will showcase the successful deployment of agriphotovoltaics in different regional and socio-economic contexts, inform and capacitate farmers, policy makers and solar developers, and support the establishment of new financing mechanisms as well as an enabling legal and policy framework for agriphotovoltaics.
The project goals are divided into four outputs that complement and reinforce each other.
-
Output I ‘Facilitating and implementing agriphotovoltaics projects on the ground’ focuses on providing proof of evidence by showcasing agriphotovoltaics projects with replicable technical designs and different ownership structures. These projects serve as practical examples for scaling up and demonstrate dual land use efficiency and social acceptance.
-
Output II ‘Business Viability and Financing’ addresses critical economic barriers by developing scalable business models and financial instruments tailored to farmers and RE developers, creating prerequisites for scaling, and ensuring the sustainability and replicability of agriphotovoltaics projects.
-
Output III ‘Awareness and capacity development’ enhances the human and institutional capacities required for sustainable implementation and scaling of agriphotovoltaics.
-
Output IV ‘Enabling policy environment’ strive to create an enabling environment for agriphotovoltaics through policy alignment and regulatory support.
